NEENAH – Froedtert ThedaCare is advancing its Graduate Medical Education (GME) program with the development of on-campus townhouses for medical residents at the former Roosevelt Elementary School site on Doty Island, adjacent to ThedaCare Medical Center-Neenah.
According to the release, the project will include 56 townhouses in two phases, offering one- and two-bedroom units with attached garages.
Construction on the first phase began in October 2025 and is expected to be completed by summer 2026, with the second phase starting in fall 2026.
Lynn Detterman, president of Froedtert ThedaCare’s North Region, said the GME program, accredited in September, prepares physicians for residencies, fellowships and specialty training across ThedaCare sites.
On-campus housing, Detterman said, aims to reduce commute times, support work-life balance, foster peer networking and allow residents to focus on training while caring for patients.
“The development plans reinforce ThedaCare’s commitment to training the next generation of physicians and addressing the region’s growing healthcare needs,” she said. “It can also help them adjust quickly in the community by embedding them in a familiar and supportive environment.”
Detterman said the expansion reflects the organization’s commitment to training the next generation of physicians and addressing Wisconsin’s growing need for medical professionals, with thousands expected to be required by 2035.
“We are deeply committed to fostering an environment where future physicians can learn, grow and serve,” she said. “By expanding our GME infrastructure, we are investing in the healthcare providers of tomorrow while also ensuring our communities have access to high-quality care today and for years to come.”
Detterman said the first internal medicine residents are expected to begin July 1, 2026.
