BIRNAMWOOD – It’s never too late to follow your passions.

That, Birnamwood resident Jolene Lex, said is an idea she can get behind.

Lex, the owner of Jo’s Haven – a skincare business in North Central Wisconsin – said though she had an interest in skincare as far back as high school, she instead pursued a business career.

However, the passion, she said, never went away.

“My husband encouraged me to go back to school to get my esthetician license,” she said.

And that’s what she did.

Lex attended school in Slinger to become a licensed esthetician – a state-licensed skincare professional who has been trained to perform treatments that promote skin health and beauty.

After obtaining her license, Lex said she opened Jo’s Haven June 1, 2023, inside Long Chiropractic Center – a chiropractic office in Wittenberg where she worked at the time.

Now, a little more than a year later, Jo’s Haven is moving into its own space (389 Main St. in Birnamwood) – taking over the space that used to be Emma Kaits Coffee House.

“I’m transitioning to my own separate space and focusing more on my business,” she said.

The former coffeehouse, Lex said, is being split into two businesses – with Jo’s Haven occupying the front of the building.

The back half of the building, she said, will be used by another business, Roots & Scoops – a family-owned farmer’s market offering locally grown produce, baked/canned goods, hand-scoop ice cream, take-and-bake pizzas and coffee.

“As part of the building’s remodeling project, a separate entrance was built for Roots & Scoops,” she said.

The Birnamwood location, Lex said, is also closer to her home – which cuts down the need to drive back and forth to Wittenberg, which is about 10 miles away, for client appointments.

“I wasn’t looking to move, but then the space became available, and we went to look at it and it was perfect,” she said.

A variety of services

As a licensed esthetician, Lex said she offers a multitude of skin services at Jo’s Haven, including various facials, dermaplaning, eyelash lifts and tints and eyebrow tints and waxing.

“My treatments are tailored to meet my client’s needs,” she said.

Some of the specialized services offered at Jo’s Haven include:

  • Strawberry sweet cream facial
  • Dermaplane deluxe facial
  • Acne facial
  • LED light therapy
  • Bright eye mask
  • Express dermaplane

The move, Lex said, allows Jo’s Haven to provide even more offerings, including spray tanning services.

“The move will provide me with more space so I can offer the spray tans,” she said. “Everyone likes how their skin looks tan, but tanning beds cause skin damage. The spray tan gives you that glow without causing any skin damage.”

In addition to treatment rooms, Lex said the building has enough space for an entry and welcome area – something Jo’s Haven doesn’t have currently as it shares an entry with the chiropractic office and is required to keep all her supplies in one room.

“I will have more room to spread out,” she said.

Lex said Jo’s Haven currently attracts clients from about 30 miles in all directions, including Shawano and Wausau.

“I have a good group of customers who support me and my business,” she said.

With the move, Lex said she anticipates even more of a reach.

The new space, she said, will provide a calming atmosphere – designed to help clients let go of their stress.

“Stress is bad for the body in so many ways, including the skin,” she said.

Lex said she uses essential oils, lighting and spa music to promote relaxation.

Most facials offered at Jo’s Haven, she said, come with a face, neck, shoulder, arm and hand massage.

“I want my clients to leave feeling pampered and relaxed,” she said.

In addition to services, Lex said Jo’s Haven also offers skincare product consultations and virtual comprehensive skincare analysis to clients.

“I want them to make sure it works for them and doesn’t cause any reactions,” she said. “I have a passion for delivering results driven by aesthetics. I want my customers to feel beautiful inside and out.”

Lex said she is currently putting the finishing touches on Jo’s Haven’s new space with an anticipated opening of mid-June.
