CLEVELAND – After almost a year of construction, ClearSky Rehabilitation Hospital Lakeshore in Cleveland is now seeing patients.
Todd Sandberg, CEO of the Cleveland facility, said the hospital’s first patient was seen Sept. 8.
“I came aboard a couple of months before the facility was completed,” he said. “Construction on the building portion went very smoothly.”
Overall, Sandberg said the staff hiring process has gone fairly smoothly – with with exception of some challenges in the therapy and nursing departments
“I would say that’s probably been the biggest hiccup in the whole process,” he said.
A rehabilitative healthcare provider based in New Mexico with locations throughout the country, ClearSky Lakeshore’s journey from conception to groundbreaking first appeared in the Sept. 9, 2024, edition of The Business News.
“The new rehabilitation hospital [has] 36 private rooms for patients and is estimated to treat about 650 people each year,” Sandberg said. “ClearSky treats patients who have had strokes, brain injuries, hip fractures, spinal injuries, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or other medically complex conditions.”
Sandberg said the rehabilitation hospital was completed at the end of June, “then, for the next few months, equipment was moved in and ClearSky started hiring leadership team members.
“Leadership then started hiring for their departments,” he said. “Before our first patient, we had two weeks of full-day orientation for all staff, just to get everybody up to speed and get them prepared so they felt comfortable in what they were going to do.”
From there, Sandberg said ClearSky Lakeshore went through its Joint Commission survey – which “was necessary to demonstrate our ability to provide the required level of care.”
“Our first 20 patients in September – it didn’t matter where they came from or [who] their payer was – [we treated them] for free,” he said. “Then the Joint Commission came in and certified us to make sure we’re able to meet the criteria of Medicare.”
Sandberg said the facility was certified about a month ago, and now awaits its Medicare number.
“After we get that number, we can start as rapidly as possible getting different insurance carriers on board, like Blue Cross, United Healthcare, etc.,” he said.
Sandberg said ClearSky Lakeshore has already received a lot of positive comments on the facility.
“We had several people at the open house who said several years ago, their family had to drive 40-45 miles every day to a different rehab facility to come see them,” he said. “They said this new facility would have been a game-changer for them if it had been here.”
Sandberg said a highlight of the facility is the 4,000-square-foot gym.
“We have physical, occupational and speech therapy,” he said. “We also have a transitional suite that’s just like a mini apartment. We can directly admit from home, so if families have loved ones who are not doing well at home and are trying to stay in their house, they can at least contact us. We’d be happy to send a liaison to their home to evaluate them.”
