OSHKOSH – From a rented room to her own storefront, Owner Heidi Blue said R&R Head Spa has helped customers relax and rejuvenate since 2024.

“I was renting a room in The Finishing Touch Nails salon on Main Street, and I had only one bed at the time,” she said. “I opened my new space in June at [600 Ohio St.], and I’m kind of treating that as like my first year of business.”

After renting the “tiny room” for a couple of years, Blue said she outgrew the space as demand for her services outpaced her capacity.

“We were getting busier,” she said. “I [eventually] had two beds in the small room, and I was still cutting and coloring hair.”

A tenured hairstylist with 13 years of experience, Blue said she discovered scalp and head treatments when a customer inquired about them.

“I was working at a barber shop, and I just felt very stuck with where I was at,” she said. “I actually had a barber come in and he [asked], ‘Do you do scalp treatments?’”

Though, at the time, she had never heard of the service, Blue said she was intrigued and decided to explore it a bit more.

“So, I was googling classes for scalp treatments, and I saw classes for trichologists, but I didn’t want to diagnose people or do anything like that,” she said. “I learned about hair loss, dry scalp, dandruff and all that stuff.”

Around the time she was researching scalp health and treatment options, Blue said the Scandinavian-style halo equipment – in which clients’ scalp and hair are rinsed by a 180-degree, moving showerhead – began “blowing up” on social media.

“I started seeing videos of scalp treatments with the halo and everything and [wondered], ‘Do we have that in Oshkosh?’” she said. “We didn’t, so I [decided to start a business and] see what happened.”

The location hunt

After finding her initial location, Blue said she started offering “discount after discount” to raise awareness of R&R Head Spa.

“I was posting online, doing giveaways, [etc.],” she said. “Some people [also] saw it on TikTok, so that got a few people [to come] in.”

Now, roughly two years later, Blue said she’s not only moved the business to a larger location, but she’s hiring additional staff and approaching the need for a third bed.

“[When I started], I only had one bed, and then people were emailing me, ‘Hey, do you have room for two people?’” she said. “[So, I worked] on getting a second bed, and now [people are asking if I] have room for three [or] four people, so I’m [thinking], ‘Oh, my gosh, I need another bed.’”

After deciding it was time to acquire more space, Blue said it was relatively difficult to find a location that fit her needs.

“I was looking for about four or five months, [but] the places just offered too much space,” she said. “[I also would have] had to do a lot of renovations, and [I didn’t] want to pay thousands and thousands of dollars to renovate.”

However, a happenstance meeting outside of a shop window, Blue said, would eventually lead her and R&R Head Spa to Ohio Street.

“I picked up my daughter from school, I was driving past the building and it said ‘for rent,’” she said. “I [looked] in the windows to see, and when I was outside of the space, I ran into the owner [and he showed me inside the same day]. It all happened within two and a half months.”

After replacing some flooring to provide an area for hair cutting and installing the necessary plumbing to her treatment beds, the shampoo room and the break room, Blue said the space was ready to welcome current and new clients.

“Other than that, it was perfect,” she said.

Growing team, skill sets

Though she still only has two beds in her current location on Ohio Street, Blue said the space allows for additional services that help round out the treatment menu of R&R Head Spa.

“We still cut and color hair here, and a new service we’re [introducing] is a beard wash with steam,” she said. “I’m going to be looking for people to rent [chair space] from me as well.”

As individuals and, increasingly, groups of people look to R&R Head Spa for their relaxation needs, Blue said her needs for additional staff grew.

“I actually had a friend working with me throughout the beginning, and then I just hired two other people within the past month and a half,” she said.

Calling on her local network of hairstylists to build her staff, Blue said, was intentional.

“[They’re] hairstylists who I’ve worked with in the past, and [are] friends also who I know I will work well with,” she said.

Though some additional coursework was required to train both herself and her staff, Blue said their background in hairstyling is proving useful as they work on their scalp treatment skills.

“We have gone to a three-day class [where] we went and learned about our products [which] are from Denmark,” she said. “We went to that [and] learned about the products, [but] I just show the girls what I do, and [tell them], ‘You’ve been washing hair for more than 10 years of your life,’ [and] just basically just throw them into it [to] follow my lead.”

Blue said she and her R&R team will also be attending a hands-on massage class in the coming months to incorporate that service into the spa’s treatment options as well.

“It’s [basically] a luxury hair wash for an hour, and we do use tools,” she said. “But I also think a hands-on experience is perfect for people as well. They just don’t know it.”

‘Love, heart and dedication’

Now several months into operating her own storefront, Blue said “it’s been like an emotional roller coaster” transitioning into the new space.

“When I first [opened], I was busy all through winter, then the first month I got in [the new space] was probably my slowest month all year,” she said.

Though the decline in traffic was worrisome, Blue said her support system offered the assurance she needed to keep things moving.

“Everyone [said], ‘You’re uncomfortable right now, and growth is uncomfortable, so you’re doing everything right,’” she said. “So, [I decided to] trust the process here.”

Following R&R Head Spa’s grand opening celebration in early July, Blue said it didn’t take long for appointment bookings to pick back up.

“We had sales, and then I think with summer winding down, people are wanting self-care again,” she said.

With plans to add her third bed within the next year, Blue said she and her R&R team are simply excited to continue providing their clients with the pampering and self-care they desire and deserve.

“That is my goal: I just want people to feel cared for,” she said.

Blue said the name R&R Head Spa also pays tribute to the two people she personally cares for day in and day out.

“It stands for Rylie and River – my two lovely daughters,” she said. “I wanted to put as much love, heart and dedication into my business as I do into them. They are the reason why I do what I do, so it felt right to have them be a part of the name.”
