GREEN BAY – One of the most iconic NFL football stadiums in the country recently earned another prestigious nod – this time from Travel Wisconsin.

In a ceremony held earlier this month inside the Lambeau Field Atrium, the iconic stadium was officially named the 11th Wonder of Wisconsin by Travel Wisconsin – the state’s tourism marketing arm.

La-La-Lambeau joins other wonders such as Apostle Island National Lakeshore in Bayfield County and Devil’s Lake State Park in Sauk County.

“Lambeau Field will now be included in Travel Wisconsin’s promotion campaign, which includes traditional marketing efforts like billboard ads, plus more unique ones like appearing on Kwik Trip’s gas pump screens,” Wisconsin Department of Tourism Secretary Anne Sayers said. “The goal is to help visitors get a sense of the potential experience that awaits them if they visit.”

What are the Wonders of Wisconsin?

Sayers said Travel Wisconsin launched the Wonders of Wisconsin campaign around a vision to celebrate the state’s unforgettable places.

“Simply put, the Wonders of Wisconsin are must-visit destinations,” she said.

In addition to Apostle Island National Lakeshore, Devil’s Lake State Park and now Lambeau Field, Sayers said the other eight Wonders of Wisconsin include:

  • Eagle Tower, Door County
  • Grandad Bluff, La Crosse County
  • Kohler-Andrae State Park, Sheboygan County
  • Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee County
  • Taliesin, Sauk County
  • Willow Falls, St. Croix County
  • Witches Gulch, Adams County
  • Yerkes Observatory, Walworth County

“We started [the campaign] more than two years ago, asking the public for ideas and destinations that leave them absolutely awed,” she said. “The response was incredible, as we received more than 200 nominations.”

Sayers said Travel Wisconsin started with a group of eight wonders to broadly represent Wisconsin.

“Since starting in 2023, we’ve added more wonders to the list,” she said. “We are so glad and proud to officially add Lambeau Field as a Wonder of Wisconsin.”

Though the current Travel Wisconsin list sits at 11, Sayers said the Wonders of Wisconsin are endless.

Sayers said it’s important to make sure folks understand the Wonders of Wisconsin are both natural and manmade.

“A lot of times, they come with a tradition associated with them,” she said. “Lambeau Field spells that out in big fashion. It’s about the field and everything that has happened here and will happen in the future… Of course, Lambeau Field was a natural fit for us all along.”

The evolution of Lambeau Field

Aaron Popkey, director of public affairs for the Packers, said every day is an exciting day at Lambeau Field, but there is extra excitement from the stadium’s inclusion as a Wonder of Wisconsin.

“For nearly 68 years, the Packers have been proud to call Lambeau Field home,” he said. “As many people know, it opened in 1957 as Green Bay City Stadium on 48 acres of cow pasture. It was renamed Lambeau Field in 1965 in honor of our co-founder, Curly Lambeau.”

From those 48 acres of grazing land, Popkey said Lambeau Field has become one of the NFL’s premier venues.

“Lambeau Field is not only a treasured asset to our organization but to the entire state of Wisconsin,” he said. “The legendary players, thrilling games and signature fan experiences make Lambeau Field a bucket list [destination] for football fans across the country and world. No other stadium blends storied history and world-class amenities quite like Lambeau Field.”

Popkey, who said he has been with the Packers for more than 30 years, said he has personally seen the transformation of the stadium over the years.

“As many of you know, our big transformation took place in 2003 with the redevelopment,” he said. “As the oldest continuously operating stadium in pro football, the Packers have invested hundreds of millions of dollars to protect its legacy and enhance the fan experience moving forward.”

Popkey said the Packers remain good stewards of Lambeau Field to protect its history while ensuring it meets the expectations of fans and visitors.

Investing in tourism pays future dividends

Gov. Tony Evers was also on hand for the event and said Lambeau Field is a “place of reverence” for football fans worldwide, making it a perfect fit for its inclusion in Wonders of Wisconsin.

“I’ve been a Packers fan for a long, long time,” he said. “Being [at Lambeau Field], I think of the legends who once played here who I grew up watching and the incredible players currently playing. I’ve been to several of the Wonders of Wisconsin, and when you leave them, you leave with a sense of awe.”

Evers said over the last several years, the State of Wisconsin has supported the Packers and tourism in the state.

“You all remember the [2025 NFL] Draft in Green Bay,” he said. “Leading up to that event, the state directed $2 million to Discover Wisconsin to market and promote the draft. As you know, it brought in 600,000 people and $105 million of economic impact for Wisconsin.”

Evers said he knows that investing in tourism pays future dividends.

“Our state investments led to $26 billion in tourism money spent in 2024,” he said. “We can’t take our eyes off the ball – we hope partnerships like this can help us keep breaking records in Wisconsin.”
