WISCONSIN – Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) has announced the 250-megawatt (MW) Darien Solar Energy Center in Walworth and Rock counties is up and running – now providing power to customers.
Mike Hooper, president of WPS and We Energies, said the project – primarily built by Wisconsin union workers – went into service this month and features more than 600,000 solar panels capable of providing enough energy to power about 75,000 homes.
Hooper said this is the second large-scale solar project the two companies have powered up in recent months.
“These new solar projects, along with our planned investments in low-carbon natural gas power plants and more renewable energy, will continue to support reliability and economic growth across the state,” he said.
The solar panels at the Darien Solar Energy Center, he said, move and track the sun throughout the day, maximizing power generation – adding the panels also capture solar energy on both sides.
Hooper said the Darien Solar Energy Center will provide both immediate and long-term savings to WPS customers as the facility is already eligible for federal tax credits that will provide millions of dollars per year of savings to customers.
