KIMBERLY – Though the building itself hasn’t changed much, President Todd Van Gompel said Baisch Engineering made sure to put its personal touch on the new company headquarters at 425 Better Way prior to its recent ribbon-cutting celebration.

“We kept it pretty much the way it is,” he said. “We’re going to get used to it for a little bit, and then see what we can do.”

After some cleaning, Van Gompel said Baisch installed signage displaying some of the company’s values, renamed the conference rooms and put their “home touches on it” to make it their own.

“In the old facility, we had five conference rooms,” he said. “In the new facility, we now have 16. So, it allows our team to have a little bit more space.”

With a staff of 130, Van Gompel said Baisch was “crammed” in their previous, Kaukauna-based office.

“Our old facility in Kaukauna at 809 Highland Ave., we were at about 15,000 square feet,” he said. “At our new facility here at 425 Better Way, [we have] about 60,000 square feet, so it’s quite a bit bigger for us, which allows [for] better opportunity for more collaboration.”

‘Can this help?’

As previously featured in The Business News’ July 27 issue, Van Gompel said the nearly 70-year-old engineering firm has experienced significant growth in recent years, prompting the need for additional space.

“Our campus is pretty nice,” he said. “We have about 15 acres here in Kimberly, and for the ribbon-cutting ceremony [in September], we comfortably fit roughly 300 to 400 people down in the back [area], and we had an ice cream trailer, a beer trailer and a balloon artist and some [temporary] tattoo artists for the kids.”

Having received “a lot of positive comments” so far – from Baisch staff, company retirees and its new neighbors – Van Gompel said they’re hoping everyone continues to settle in.

“If you think about it, we took 130 people and we shook up their daily activity [with] new spots, new places to go, [a different] bathroom, our printers are in new locations, you’re sitting next to new people, [etc.],” he said. “Hopefully, this allows us to reset how we do things and think about what’s most important.”

With the new space, Van Gompel said, came a new seating arrangement that purposefully intertwines each of Baisch’s different disciplines.

“We’re a full-service engineering firm, so we have a civil structural department, a process department, electrical instrumentation (E&I)… and we have Building Information Modeling (BIM),” he said. “Rather than keep everybody in the same discipline in one area, siloed, we sprinkle two or three structural [engineers] with two or three process [engineers] with two or three E&I and BIM, and then our project coordinators are around that to help that collaboration [and] speed of communication for us.”

The introduction of an on-site cafeteria, an outdoor patio and other communal seating areas, Van Gompel said, also helps promote cross-departmental communication.

“In the middle of the building, we have some open spaces [and] we’re going to start to experiment with project teams – where we temporarily move project teams closer together,” he said. “If we put that team together as we’re checking things, can this help us improve our efficiency? Can this help us improve our accuracy?”

Expanding footprint, awareness

As Baisch continues to grow its physical footprint, Van Gompel said the company is working to expand its awareness as well.

“Steve Baisch started [the company] in 1958, so we’ve been here a long time,” he said. “Probably, not a lot of people have heard about us, but with the way we’re growing and continuing to grow, our new headquarters here shows that strength and that confidence that we will be here. We’ll be a good partner for our future clients.”

With the full support of the surrounding community and the Baisch family, Van Gompel said the company’s future is bright in the Fox Cities.

“We’re just excited to be part of the community here,” he said.
