CLINTONVILLE – Alliance Construction & Design and Schutt Industries recently celebrated the start of construction on Schutt’s new expansion project with a groundbreaking ceremony.
Located at 185 Industrial Ave., the new building will provide 90,600 square feet of additional space for the Clintonville-based manufacturer of severe-duty trailers, cargo-handling equipment and custom-engineered integration solutions.
Schutt’s products serve military, commercial, consumer, communications, disaster-response and defense applications.
Derek Wagner, project manager for Alliance, said they are proud to partner with Schutt on this next phase of growth – marking the first time the two companies have partnered together.
“Schutt Industries has built a strong reputation for creating highly engineered, American-made products for demanding applications,” he said. “We are excited to help create a new building that supports their team and allows the company to expand the services it provides.”
Wagner said Alliance works collaboratively with clients through the planning, design and construction process to create facilities that support their operational needs and long-term goals.
“This new build for Schutt will also allow for a better workflow for them,” he said. “Schutt will still be utilizing its adjacent existing building for one of its operations and the new building for another operation. With the buildings right near each other, it will allow them to move equipment back and forth in a timely manner.”
With construction beginning in earnest Aug. 3, Wagner said the building is expected to be completed May 14, 2027.
“This new building is an exciting challenge,” he said. “Alliance is always up for a challenge, so we are looking forward to it.”
Wagner said the building will feature bridge cranes, jib cranes, office space and more.
“There will also be conference rooms, a break room, etc.,” he said. “In general, the new building will give Schutt more flexibility and room to work.”
From a construction standpoint, Wagner said he doesn’t expect there to be supply-chain issues that hamper the project.
“We were able to order the steel ahead of time, so it should be delivered in November, which will limit any winter condition costs,” he said. “Lead times are generally not much of an issue anymore.”
Small city, big growth
Clintonville Mayor Jeannie Schley said with Hoffmaster’s recent expansion – 86,000 square feet – near the Schutt building project, it shows that the small city of 4,600 is a great place for continued growth.
“It’s a huge thing for the city,” she said. “The work ethic in the area is second to none, but we also need more workers. Between the two groundbreakings, there will be a need for about 140 additional employees. A lot is going on in Clintonville. We are working on adding some additional housing for the increased need for employees.”
Hearing from Schutt
Steve Schutt, vice president at Schutt Industries, said talks and planning for the expansion go back a couple of years to 2024.
He said Schutt’s expansion – which will double its square footage – is due to the company’s increased sales of its military trailers.
“It’s very exciting to finally break ground and get to work on the project,” he said. “Two years ago, it began with putting in the mechanisms and tools to support what we’ll be doing over the next several years and into future decades.”
At its core, Steve said military trailers have always been Schutt’s main line of work.
But over the years, he said, the company has expanded from smaller trailers to 40-ton, tri-axle trailers.
“We have current contracts we need to continue to fill and future contracts we’ll need to fulfill,” he said. “Some of those future contracts will begin later this year into early next year. The timing of our occupancy next spring will be a big help in fulfilling all of our contracts.”
Growing up in Clintonville himself, Steve said the investment in the new, 90,600-square-foot building proves that Schutt – which began operations in 1998 – is here to stay.
“Our community is very important to us – we want to help Clintonville continue to grow,” he said. “We currently have about 100 employees, and with the expansion, we might even need more than the 40 we estimate over the long term.”
In manufacturing, Steve said there are always challenges when it comes to hiring, but with a strong workforce in Clintonville and the surrounding areas, he is confident Schutt can fill its needs.
“We looked at a lot of other sites in Clintonville, some in this industrial park,” he said. “Logistically, we wanted to keep everything on one main campus. We could have gone in several different directions, but we think this site is perfect.”

“Our current facility is where we do all of our welding, assembly, painting, etc.,” Steve said. “The new building will be specific for assembly and painting.”
Steve said the amount of time it takes to manufacture a trailer depends on several factors, including the size of the trailer and its complexity.
“That means it might only be a trailer a day up to several hundred per month,” he said. “We primarily complete military trailers, but we do some commercial trailer work, too. There are some niche product lines in there.”
