On my way to work one morning, the radio DJ posed the question: “What is something you can’t understand until you’re older?”

That got me reflecting on the perspectives and priorities I have today compared to when I was younger.

As an exit planning consultant, seasoned business owner, devoted mother, loving wife and proud grandmother, my journey through life has unfolded with its share of twists and turns.

Each role has contributed its own unique perspective, offering valuable insights into the intricacies of existence.

Along the way, I’ve come to realize some truths are only revealed over time.

These are the insights that shape our perspectives, transform our priorities and enrich our lives.

Resilience
One of the greatest revelations age brings is the understanding of resilience.

In the fast-paced world of business, setbacks are inevitable.

As a young entrepreneur, I often found myself shaken by failures and unsure of my ability to bounce back.

But with each obstacle overcome, I discovered an inner strength I never knew existed.

It’s only through the accumulation of experiences, both triumphs and tribulations, that I’ve truly grasped the essence of resilience.

Age has taught me setbacks are not signals to surrender but rather opportunities for growth and adaptation.

They help shape us, reinforcing our resolve and equipping us with the strength to face whatever lies ahead.

Relationships
Similarly, the value of relationships takes on a deeper meaning as we grow older.

In the hustle and bustle of the corporate world, it is easy to prioritize ambition over human connection.

However, with age comes the realization that success is not measured solely by professional accomplishments but by the quality of relationships nurtured along the way.

Whether it be the unwavering support of family, the camaraderie of colleagues or the bonds forged with clients, relationships form the foundation upon which businesses thrive.

As a mother and grandmother, I have come to cherish the moments spent with loved ones, recognizing them as the true treasures of life.

As an exit planning consultant, I’ve witnessed firsthand the importance of nurturing connections with clients, peers and coworkers — not just for the sake of business — but for the richness they bring to our lives.

Perspective
Furthermore, age grants us a broader perspective on life’s complexities.

In our youth, we often view the world through a narrow lens, focusing on immediate gratification and short-term goals.

But as we age, our horizons expand, allowing us to see the bigger picture.

This newfound perspective enables us to make more informed decisions, grounded in wisdom and foresight.

As an exit planning consultant, this panoramic view is invaluable, as I help guide clients through the complex process of transition with clarity and purpose.

It’s a reminder that success is not only measured by financial gain but also by the legacy we leave behind and the impact we have on others.

Gratitude
Additionally, age fosters a profound sense of gratitude.

In today’s hypercompetitive society, it is easy to become disillusioned by the pursuit of success, constantly striving for more without pausing to appreciate the blessings already bestowed upon us.

However, as I’ve grown older, I’ve learned to cultivate a spirit of gratitude, recognizing the abundance that surrounds me.

Whether it be the opportunity to pursue my passions, the love of my family or the privilege of witnessing my grandson grow, each day is a gift to be cherished.

Conclusion
Working with business owners as they plan for exit, I’ve learned to recognize the privilege of helping others navigate life’s transitions.

What you can’t understand until you’re older transcends the boundaries of profession and personal roles.

It’s a tapestry woven with resilience, relationships, perspective and gratitude — threads that intertwine to form the fabric of a life well-lived.

I am humbled by the wisdom that comes with age.

It’s wisdom born of experience, shaped by the triumphs and trials of a life fully lived.

Though none of us can truly understand or appreciate the lessons only age can teach until we’ve grown older, we can all appreciate the relationships we have with loved ones, friends and colleagues.

We can show gratitude every day and realize each of our journeys are different and unique but embracing the lessons learned is a gift.
