WEST SALEM – For the past 10-plus years, husband and wife team Kyle and Erica Boland said they have been gradually growing their business, Coulee Health – with the most recent growth being a move to a new location (N4622 County Road M).

Kyle said the new 6,000-square-foot location more than triples Coulee Health’s available space.

The clinic, he said, is located about a mile and a half from its former clinic and includes a birthing center and gym facility.

“We will be delivering our first baby within the next month or two, which is pretty cool,” he said. “To my knowledge, there are no other birth centers (like it) in the immediate area.”

Complementing specialties

As a chiropractor, Erica said she specializes in core and pelvic floor care along with movement milestones and support for pediatrics.

She said she also specializes in women’s and children’s health and has been a doula and midwife for many years.

Erica said she blends her chiropractic, doula and midwife experiences to help women prepare their bodies for pregnancy, labor and ultimately assist women as they recover their pelvic floor postpartum.

“Working with a doula to advocate, support and guide you through your pregnancy, birth and postpartum experience can make all the difference,” she said. “And with that, comes all of the support little ones need along the way.”

Kyle said he is a family chiropractor with a passion for sports performance and functional medicine – working with young athletes on injury prevention and performance.

“They refer to me as the ‘ortho guy’ as my focus is on hip or shoulder issues, both chronic or acute,” he said.  “I enjoy helping people solve problems like burnout, weight gain, exhaustion and lingering and unresolved hormone issues.”

Evolving along the way

Getting its start as strictly a chiropractic clinic, Kyle said Coulee Health has evolved over the years – with the couple’s main objective focused on treating the whole person in a well-rounded approach.

“We provide our patients with the tools they can use on their own, outside of the time they’re in the office,” he said. “We want to get to the root cause of the matter and facilitate why there are symptoms in the first place.”

The three main sectors of care at Coulee Health, Kyle said, include chiropractic, midwifery and fitness, which the clinic supports through its more than 15 services, including massage therapy, functional medicine, birth and postpartum doula services, prenatal, postnatal and postpartum care, along with moveMentors – an online education platform.

Pediatric occupational therapy, he said, is a recent addition to the clinic’s offerings.

“We didn’t want to pigeonhole ourselves, which is why we didn’t put (only) chiropractic in the name of the business,” he said. “We have that holistic approach and are more than just chiropractic. Erica has been a doula longer than we’ve been in business. She’s always had a passion for pregnancy and for the prenatal, postpartum and pediatric patient population.  That has always been her area of expertise and her focus. And she’s now a midwife.”

Kyle said Coulee Health also serves clients’ athletic and personal health journeys.

“We do a lot of rehab and physical therapy,” he said. “When someone comes in and has suffered an injury, we walk with them until they reach their pre-injury status, which, for some, is the goal. But for others, there could be more, and we help them expand beyond where they were.”

Coulee Health also has youth strength programs, which Kyle said helps provide a foundation for programming and fitness to serve them into their adulthood.

As the clinic added services and areas of focus, Kyle said, it also added staff.

He said he describes the Coulee Health team as like-minded.

“Everybody is in it to help people out,” he said. “We are here to serve others, and everybody truly feels on board with the mission. We want to do things the right way in our world. I think this is true of anybody in any health care or service institution.”

Above all, Kyle said the Coulee Health team does what is best for the patient.

“Trying to get them better while giving them long-term tools for success – this matches our core values,” he said.

Kyle said the clinic’s name, Coulee, refers to the Greater La Crosse area, which is often called the “Coulee Region” – an area the Bolands said they are proud to be a part of.

The community outreach and educational opportunities offered at Coulee Health, he said, are among the ways in which the community can get to know the team.

“This becomes a reciprocal relationship as we get to know our patients and future patients,” he said.

Kyle said Coulee Health also holds a variety of events in-house, such as meet-ups for moms journeying their way to motherhood and presentations hosted by gym coach, Robert Lynch, focusing on mental performance for athletes.

The clinic, he said, also opens its new space to the community to host their own special event.

The relationship Coulee Health has with the community and the relationship community members have with Coulee Health, Kyle said, goes both ways – with many of its patients coming from referrals or word-of-mouth recommendations.

“It’s the day-to-day exposure and patients who have had good experiences working with us that tell our story to potential patients,” he said. “Members of the community patronize our business, but we have supported them (through the years) as well. It goes both ways. I think that’s the fabric of a community. That is what makes this community awesome.”

A balancing act

Work-life balance, the Bolands – parents of four sons ages 17, 14, 12 and eight – said, is top of mind for the team at Coulee Health as they aim to practice what they preach to clients.

“(We know) how quickly the kids grow as our oldest has only two more years until he graduates high school and then he is out of the house,” Kyle said. “Just looking back, it is amazing how quickly that time has gone.”

The Bolands said they also have the responsibility of growing the business.

“We want to provide a great setting and clinic for our patients and our team,” Kyle said. “It’s finding that balance with family life outside of these walls and the work inside of them.”

Kyle said the Coulee Health team has had a busy year.

“One of the many things going on is providing for families and mothers who want to have a birth experience, not necessarily in the hospital and not at home,” he said. “They can have that experience here. I think that is really unique and pretty cool.”

Kyle said the clinic also updated its software this year.
