MARINETTE – A Place For Coffee in Marinette – known for its drinks and community-centered approach – is expanding its space for guests to gather.
Owner Jennifer Schiller said the coffee shop – which was first highlighted in The Business News’ Dec. 2, 2024 issue – recently added a south-side outdoor deck where visitors and locals can enjoy their drinks in the sunshine.
Schiller said the deck is nearing completion.
“Before customers utilize it, I want to make sure it’s sealed properly – that way, if coffee spills, the deck will be protected,” she said. “The deck will also be dog-friendly. I really love the idea of customers being able to take their dog for a walk and sitting on the deck and having coffee, but there will be some pretty strict guidelines there.”
“Obviously,” Schiller said, she doesn’t want dogs “relieving themselves” on or near the deck.
“Nobody wants that,” she said. “Dogs will have to be leashed and can’t be aggressive. This deck is for everybody to enjoy, and nobody wants to sit there and hear barking and whining. I’ll have a little water station for your pooch to get a drink, too.”
Originally from California, Northeast Wisconsin transplant Schiller said the idea of adding a deck was part of her vision even before she opened A Place For Coffee at 1059 Marinette Ave. in 2022.
“If you notice, my handicap ramp on the south side of the building is very long,” she said. “Initially, when my architect was planning the ramp, he was going to do it in more of a spiral. I told him that someday, I really wanted to build a deck, so he changed his plans to make the ramp a longer, straight one.”
Schiller said the idea was for the ramp to have direct access to the deck whenever it was to be built.
“Due to several delays, the deck is just being completed this summer,” she said. “I am so excited about it. The ramp is attached to the deck, so it’s accessible to everyone. The response from customers has been overwhelmingly great, and everybody loves sitting outside.”
Features of the space, Schiller said, include a built-in bench on two sides and a covered pergola-style roof on one side.
“By about 10:30 or 11 in the morning, the building shades other parts of the deck,” she said. “With the shade from the building and the pergola-style roof, there will be plenty of shade to sit in – if that’s what you want.”
Schiller said the deck will also feature non-movable, built-in tables.
“People can go right to the deck and place their order from the Clover app,” she said. “We can bring their orders right out to them on the deck.”
Situated in a former church, Schiller said the success of the coffee shop in its four years of operation has come from locals and travelers passing through the area.
“I think word of mouth has helped a lot with business,” she said. “We obviously have our local regular customers, but we get more travelers passing through town than anybody else. Our Google reviews are mostly from travelers.”
