ASHWAUBENON – District Pour Haus in Ashwaubenon recently expanded its seating options with the addition of a patio.
After opening District Pour Haus (686 Mike McCarthy Way) in January, Majority Owner April Smith said the establishment – featuring the only self-pour beverage wall in the area – completed its new patio in mid-July.
Since The Business News first reported on District Pour Haus in its Feb. 9 issue, Smith said the self-pour concept has increasingly found its fans.
“It’s not that difficult once you see it and actually work it,” she said. “It’s a little bit intimidating for a lot of people, especially those who are more mature in age – they are just more used to the regular traditional bars – but once they see it in action and get used to it, they’re totally fine with it.”
Smith said younger customers, in particular, have embraced the self-pour concept.
“They love the option of being able to take little samples of different kinds of beverages and figure out which ones they like, [including] some they never would have tried had they not been here, because they know they can only pour a little bit if they want,” she said. “But it is a unique experience for anybody walking in.”
Patio power-up
In order to bolster this experience, Smith said the patio concept has “always been in the works.”
Its planning was so thorough, she said, that once construction started, it was completed in just 12 days.
Though Smith said it’s “just a fenced-in area with tables and umbrellas – nothing fancy,” the expansion addresses what had become a common request from customers for outdoor seating.
Completed just ahead of the start of Green Bay Packers’ training camp, she said she hopes to draw customers from the team’s public practices at nearby Ray Nitschke Field.
The early response to the outdoor area, Smith said, has, “so far, [been] so good.”
With District Pour Haus regularly featuring live music, she said the lesser volume and spatial constraints of the patio (compared to its indoor stage) offers the option of booking bands with four or more members.
Private events
Smith said she’s been pleasantly surprised by the businesses, nonprofits and other organizations that have booked private events and fundraisers at District Pour Haus.
“It just kind of evolved,” she said. “Obviously, we are set up to handle those types of parties, but we were mostly looking at two-top, four-top or six-top table [customers], but now, people are actually wanting to do events here.”
Smith said the new patio can only help the establishment’s hosting capabilities.
“We’ve been fortunate – we have received a lot of inquiries about booking larger parties: rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, retirement parties, that kind of stuff,” she said.
Self-pour cocktails?
From its inception, Smith said the wall of 48 self-serve taps at District Pour Haus has featured various beers, ciders and wines.
More beverage options will soon be available, she said, as the Village of Ashwaubenon recently awarded the establishment a liquor license.
“We will have batched cocktails on the wall, self-pour,” she said. “We are also looking at putting in a bar to serve higher-end cocktails. The bar will likely not be self-pour – we would staff that with a licensed bartender.”
Smith said the license also allows the business to sell canned beverages, including beer and pre-mixed cocktails, outdoors.
