GREEN BAY – With 243,926 tons of cargo moved through the Port of Green Bay during the month of May, annual tonnage totals for the port continue to accumulate.
Year-to-date totals of 429,992 tons show an increase of 54% over the same period last year.
“The port is an economic barometer for Northeast Wisconsin, so it’s always good to see strong shipping numbers early in the season,” Port Director Dean Haen said. “While we can’t predict what will happen over the course of a season, this is a good sign so far.”
The leading cargo import for May was salt at 95,186 tons.

Limestone (53,624 tons)Petroleum products (40,096 tons)Cement (22,694 tons)Wood pulp (7,454 tons)Coal (4,081 tons)
Twenty-one ships entered the port during May, three more than the same month last year.
“The Great Lakes maritime economy is the third largest economy in the world, and the Port of Green Bay recognizes the important role waterborne transportation plays – not just now, but for the future as well,” Haen said.
