APPLETON — When Rob Barron contracted COVID-19 in June 2020, he said a trip to his wellness physician to help him manage the sickness sent him on a health journey he never expected to take.

“I went to my wellness physician that I saw in Florida — I lived in Florida at the time — and she was able (set me on the course for recovery) overnight, which I didn’t expect (to happen), with just glutathione (via IV),” he said.

Glutathione is an antioxidant made from amino acids, glycine, cysteine and glutamic acid that helps the immune system function as well as tissue building and repair.

“She gave me a high dose of that, along with vitamin C,” he said. “I got healthy quickly. I knew from there that there was something behind this way of wellness.”

Barron said he spent the next three years researching the benefits of IV infusions.

A move back to the Fox Valley, where Barron had previously lived, he said would push him to make the next step in the realm of IV — opening a franchise business.

“It was something missing here, and I felt the whole Fox Valley could benefit from it,” he said. “That’s why I decided to open a Prime IV (Hydration and Wellness franchise) location.”

Prime IV Hydration and Wellness was started in 2017 by Amy Neary, owner of Any Lab Test Now, a company that provides affordable lab testing to those without insurance or that are under-insured.

According to the Prime IV’s website (primeivhydration.com), one of the services Any Lab Test Now offers is B-12 energy shots, but throughout the years, customers requested more.

Through research, Neary created IV hydration therapies and opened Prime IV, which has grown into a franchise.

“I believe she understood there was a need for people to have somewhere they could go to (take) their wellness into their own hands and were able to change their path,” Barron said.

IV therapy, he said, can treat a variety of ailments and can also be used as a precaution for future ailments that may arise.

According to the Prime IV website, IV therapy also allows the body to absorb nearly 100% of the nutrients, whereas, when vitamins are taken orally, the body’s gastrointestinal tract only digests up to 20% of the nutrients.

“When you bring your levels up to where they need to be, you can prevent chronic disease, you can help with athletic recovery and weight loss,” he said.

Barron officially opened the doors of Prime IV’s Appleton location last September at 2100 South Kensington Drive, Suite 1.

Different IVs for personal needs
At Prime IV Hydration and Wellness, Barron said there are many different kinds of IVs to choose from that meet different needs.

But first, he said, clients will go through a full medical consultation with the on-site physician and registered nurses.

“They would fill out a medical intake form (and) sit down with us for the consultation to understand what’s bothering them the most, what their health goals are and what they want out of (IV),” he said. “We then come up with custom infusions to meet those demands.”

Barron said the standard IV options include:

The Pure Hydration — which is the equivalent of drinking 2.5 gallons of waterThe Revitalizer — helps fight fatigue (B-complex, B-12, taurine and an amino acid blend)The Weekend Warrior — made for athletes in need of rehydration and energy(B-Complex, B-12, magnesium chloride and an amino acid blend)The Champion — provides a performance and recovery boost for athletes (B-Complex, B-12, B-5, B-6 magnesium chloride, vitamin C and an amino acid blend)The Glow — helps with anti-aging (B-Complex, magnesium chloride, vitamin C, biotin, glutathione and an amino acid blend)The After Party — helps with minor hangover effects (B-Complex, B-12, toradol and a nausea relief aid)The Resurrection — made for more severe hangover effects (B-Complex, B-12, toradol, vitamin C, glutathione, acetylcysteine and a nausea relief aid)The Skinny Drip — helps boost weight loss (B-Complex, B-6, B-12, taurine, amino acid blend and lipolean injection)Immunity Armor — helps with cold and flu symptoms (B-Complex, B-6, B-12, magnesium chloride, vitamin C, glutathione, zinc)The Jetsetter — made for jet lag recovery (B-12, vitamin C, magnesium chloride)The Myer’s Cocktail — helps several medical conditions such as depression, asthma, migraines, fatigue, fibromyalgia and allergies (B-Complex, B-5, B-6, B-12, magnesium chloride and calcium gluconate)
At Prime IV in Appleton, Barron said the most popular IV options include The Skinny Drip, Immunity Armor and both athletic recovery IVs (The Weekend Warrior and The Champion).

He said customers can expect to spend about an hour to an hour and a half on their first visit.

Afterward, infusions typically take about 45 minutes, Barron said.

Customers, he said, will typically see “their biggest benefit” after two to three infusions.

“And then from there, we say every 30 days is best to continue to feel their best,” he said.

Barron said anyone 16 years old or older can do IV therapy and Prime IV.

Taking charge of their health
Since opening last fall, Barron said the response has been nothing short of grand.

“It’s tremendous — I can’t even put enough exclamation points behind it,” he said. “(Our customers have) taken us to the top five out of 100 locations in the nation. That’s how tremendous that response has been.”

Dealing with COVID-19 himself, Barron said he feels since the pandemic, “people have started to take their health into their own hands.”

“(They have) been a little more proactive instead of reactive,” he said. “People have started to do their research and understand that being a little more forward-thinking in their health (is important) since COVID. There’s been such an expansive interest in IV therapy.”

Prime IV Hydration and Wellness is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
