BROWN COUNTY – The exterior work on the Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB) is officially underway.

Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach placed then ceremonial “first paint stroke” on the building’s exterior during a press conference July 19 – signifying the start of the $8.2 million multi-phased improvement project, which will be funded through a combination of Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement grant funds and Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics state-aid grants.

“It’s time to brighten things up and give our airport a more contemporary look,” Streckenbach said.

Updates, which Airport Director Marty Piette said will be completed in four phases over the next year, includes a fresh coat of paint to the outside, LED lighting, decorative security fencing and walkway and plaza repainting, as well as adding and updating security features for passengers.

All airport parking lots will be resurfaced as well.

“With air travel booming once again, and more flights than ever at GRB, we thought it was important to have a look that was more modern and inviting, as well as installing new features, such as additional lighting and security fencing,” Piette said.
He said it’s not unlike homeowners taking care of their homes.

“It needs updating now and then,” Piette said. “We want local travelers to feel good about flying out of GRB, and we want visitors to feel welcome. Giving our terminal an updated look is a part of that effort.”

He said the most noticeable change travelers will notice is the change in the airport’s early 1990’s turquoise-colored, which will be replaced with a more modern, gray color.

The project is expected to be completed sometime next year.

Immel Construction of Green Bay is the general contractor for the project.

GRB is the third largest airport in the state, serving Northeast Wisconsin and portions of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and is home to five major airlines – American, Delta, Frontier, Sun Country and United Airlines – and two fixed base operators – JetAir Group and Executive Air.
