APPLETON – ThedaCare has introduced Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) – a non-invasive therapy aimed at easing symptoms for patients with chronic chest pain (angina) or congestive heart failure.

Available since March 2026, Ameer Kabour – cardiologist and medical director of ThedaCare Cardiovascular Care – said EECP is primarily used for patients who are not candidates for invasive procedures like stents or bypass surgery.

“Over a period of about seven weeks, patients undergo EECP treatments five days per week,” he said. “These treatments may help patients improve the blood flow to their heart, which may lead to reduced symptoms and an ability for patients to tolerate more physical activity. That can mean a noticeable and improved quality of life for some.”

Kabour said EECP uses inflatable cuffs around the legs and buttocks that alternate inflation and deflation with each heartbeat, stimulating blood flow and encouraging the growth of new vessels to bypass blocked arteries.

He said the therapy may also reduce reliance on medications used to manage heart symptoms.

Support from the ThedaCare Foundation-Appleton helped facilitate the purchase of the EECP equipment.
