SHEBOYGAN – Thanks to its “perfect location,” Manager Tiffany Lange said Anglers Pub & Grill in Sheboygan is making a strong comeback.

Lange said the reimagined restaurant is steadily reclaiming its place in the community after operating for years under a different name and ownership.

Located at 518 S. Pier Drive along the Sheboygan River Boardwalk near the entrance to Lake Michigan, Lange said the building has long been home to a restaurant in one form or another

“Right before us, it was Driftwood, and before that, it was called Anglers Avenue Pub & Grill,” she said. “We want to bring it back to what it was, so we’re trying to rebuild that reputation Anglers Avenue had.”

Lange said the restaurant’s location, patio seating and river views complement its menu, giving guests the option to dine indoors or outside.

“The view is wonderful – you can see the river and lots of people walking on the boardwalk,” she said. “Oftentimes, people will have their drinks and food at the restaurant and then take a walk afterward.”

Though the restaurant benefits from its proximity to Lake Michigan and the area’s strong tourism industry, Lange said serving local customers is also a top priority.

“Though it’s mostly known for tourism, we really do try to focus on our locals as well,” she said. “I think we have a nice balance of visitors and locals.”

Strong start

Since its reopening, Lange said things have been going “really well.”

“Honestly, business has been really good – we are super thankful for that,” she said. “Obviously, every business experiences obstacles you have to get over, and it’s all a learning process. The owners, the Gashi brothers, have never really owned a bigger pub and grill like this, but it has always been one of their dreams.”

Until opening Anglers, Lange said the brothers have focused on operating locally owned, family-oriented restaurants.

The closure of Driftwood about two years ago, she said, left the Gashi brothers with some apprehension about reopening a similar concept in today’s market.

Lange said concerns centered on entering a new location and navigating a more tourism-driven environment.

“They are super successful, but there was some nervousness about being in a different area and not knowing what to expect – especially in a tourism area,” she said. “I think the previous restaurant’s issues dealt more with staffing compared to anything else.”

“Knock on wood,” Lange said, but Anglers hasn’t had to deal with staffing issues as of yet.

“I hope it never gets to that point,” she said. “I do all the scheduling, and I haven’t had any problems yet. Actually, I sometimes feel like I might have too many people scheduled. I suppose that’s a good problem to have. I’d rather have too many people compared to not enough.”

Before occupying the building, Lange said new signage had to be added, and the group completed some heavy cleaning.

“We spent hours doing that, and it was a lot of work, but now that we’ve been open for a bit, it’s all been worth it,” she said.

Lange said the recently completed Fourth of July holiday week illustrated how Anglers is reestablishing itself as a waterfront destination.

The celebration, she said, included a large Vietnam veteran boat parade on the Sheboygan River, with many boats decorated in lights and other patriotic displays.

“It seems as though everyone comes to the boardwalk this time of the year, so we threw a huge event with live music and food/drinks outside of the restaurant,” she said. “We also had our full restaurant inside offering more because of how big the crowd was.”

What’s offered

Gaining traction because of its location and service, Lange said Anglers offers about nine different cocktails and a full menu.

Highlights of the menu, she said, include the restaurant’s burgers and fish offerings.

“We offer fish every day, but then on Friday, we offer a more extensive fish menu,” she said. “Every day, we offer baked salmon, baked haddock and a fish sandwich. On Fridays, we offer fish fries – perch, cod, walleye – and shrimp.”

With a Lake Michigan-adjacent location, Lange said Anglers is “dipping its feet in the water” by introducing another unique service.

“Because there are a lot of charter fishing boats in the area, we offer people the chance to bring their fish to us, and we will cook it for them,” she said. “They pay for any sides they might want and for us to cook their fish. It’s a pretty cool offering – we are just getting going with advertising that more.”

Lange said an event similar to its Fourth Bash is planned for the Aug. 7-9 weekend, when the city hosts the fourth annual Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge.

She said some of the best viewing areas for the boat races are along the lakefront at the end of S. Pier Drive, offering clear sightlines of the action on Lake Michigan.

“These boat races go all over the world,” she said. “They’ve come to Sheboygan for the past several summers. It’s obviously right by us, so we’ll offer something that weekend very similar to what we offered on the Fourth. It should be a great weekend.”
