WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Aspirus Health is highlighting the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) as an advanced treatment option for patients with complex or slow-healing wounds across its wound care services.
According to Athena Boardman – clinical program director at Aspirus Wisconsin Rapids Hospital – the therapy delivers 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber, increasing oxygen levels in the bloodstream to help damaged tissue heal more effectively.
Boardman said it is commonly used for diabetic foot ulcers, bone infections, radiation-related injuries and other wounds that have not responded to traditional treatment.
“Hyperbaric oxygen helps stimulate the growth of new blood vessels in the body,” she said. “By improving oxygenation to damaged tissue, we can support healing, reduce infection risk and, in some cases, even prevent amputation.”
Boardman said patients undergoing treatment typically spend about two hours in a clear, enclosed chamber while breathing pure oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure. The procedure is painless, and patients remain awake during sessions.
Patients with diabetes, circulation issues or wounds that are slow to heal, she said, may benefit from evaluation by a wound care specialist to determine whether hyperbaric oxygen therapy is appropriate.
Boardman said the treatment is part of its continued investment in expanding advanced wound care services and improving access to specialized care across the region.
