PLYMOUTH – Brad Preissner and Guillermo (Mo) Seifert – the new co-owners of R & R Moving Company (20 Frederick St.) – said they are teaming up to continue the successful Plymouth-based business, taking over operations earlier this month.

Founded in 2008, Preissner said he grew up with R & R Moving Company – learning about the industry from the ground floor.

“This was the first job that I had out of high school in the summer of 2021,” he said. “My brother actually got me a job here. He thought I would be a good fit. We then recruited new people for the previous owner.”

Preissner said it turned out to be a good fit.

Starting out with regular moves, he said he spent his time moving boxes and large furniture locally.

Eventually, Preissner said he began assisting the company in cross-country moves, slowly working his way into the office – “helping out here and there.”

“I was still on the truck, doing moves and learning the business,” he said. “I (just) bought the company, but I started to learn the ins and outs of the business gradually in the years before becoming an owner.”

R & R’s former owner, Ryan Schroeder, said not only was the timing right for him to step away from the day-to-day business, but passing the responsibility on to Preissner and Seifert is also a good fit for the future of the company.

“I am handing the business off to the right people,” he said. “Brad grew up in the business with us and is a quality person.”

Schroeder said he still owns the building and will be available for on-going consultation if needed.

“I want them to be wildly successful and will continually make myself available to advise them on any bids or anything that they need,” he said.

Learning curve

Preissner said the learning curve of the business has been a gradual process.

“I actually recruited my business partner, Mo, to work here about a year ago, and he started out in the same way as myself – working on the truck,” he said. “He actually had an injury last summer, so he was able to get into the office and do a lot of inside work while he was recovering. He also (naturally) acquired the office expertise.”

Business ownership and an entrepreneurial spirit, Preissner said, are not novel to him.

“I had my own business back in high school, selling high-end designer shoes,” he said. “I used to attend trade shows held in Milwaukee and Chicago for a number of years. It was called Sneaker Con (more formally known as Sneaker Conventions). It was a fun gig. I always knew that I wanted to work for myself and be my own boss.”

Preissner said he and Mo have been friends for a long time – beginning as high school comrades – graduating in the same class from Plymouth High School.

“We both saw potential in the company, and we both enjoy the moving industry,” he said. “We appreciate providing this service to people that need us.”

Preissner said he and Mo are like-minded, which makes for good team ownership.

“I don’t mind driving trucks,” he said. “We’re both fairly physically inclined to do this type of work. We like many aspects of the business, but mostly the fact that we are able to help people.”

Moving to a new home or town, Preissner said, is a significant event in peoples’ lives.

“A (physical) move is one of the biggest things that people encounter in their lives,” he said. “It can be very stressful, (but) we can provide that reprieve for people.”

Preissner said all of R & R’s staff members are trained and knowledgeable in moving operations and procedures.

“They can help take away some of that stress for clients,” he said. “Our (average) clientele is in their 60s or so. We serve a lot of elderly clients. It is a natural opportunity to provide the service and to take care of the heavy lifting.”

Moving on your own, Preissner said, tends to be more of a young person’s game.

“When people are younger, they want to do it themselves and recruit a bunch of friends,” he said. “We have a lot of clients in senior care facilities and nursing homes. We specialize in (that) kind of move, too. We help our clients and try to minimize their stress and assist them with whatever they need.”

Beyond the Midwest

Though co-ownership is a new challenge for the long-time friends, Preissner said once he and Mo get beyond the tactical transitions – like account transfers – they will continue to focus on marketing initiatives.

“R & R Moving Company is undergoing a minor refresh of the brand with updating the logo, changing the color theme of blue, red, white and black to match the trucks (and) doing some direct mailing to homeowners who have recently listed their homes,” he said.

Preissner said the largest segment of R & R’s business is the residential side – though they have some representation in the corporate move sector as well.

“Our largest stream of revenue would be local, residential moving, however, we have (done) a sizable number of cross-country moves,” he said. “We still have a pretty solid foothold in Sheboygan County.”

Preissner said R & R Moving Company is equipped to manage a number of different logistical scenarios.

“I’ve had a move where we flew out to San Diego and used a rental truck to move (the) customers back to Plymouth,” he said. “Customers’ moves have taken us out of state to Florida, Texas and California. We have moved people from the East Coast to the West Coast.”

R & R Moving Company has also assisted people relocating out of the country, Preissner said – loading up shipping containers that have traveled as far as Russia and Lithuania.

One growth segment for R & R Moving, Preissner said, is the disposal of unwanted items, as they can remove them and often look into the donation or recycling of unwanted possessions.

“We try to find a good home for everything, if we can,” he said. “People call us to do estate cleanups, too. If Mom or Dad passes away, oftentimes the kids don’t want to deal with everything. We come into the home and clear the whole place out.”

Many moving companies, Preissner said, are national and have local office affiliates, which is where R & R Moving Company differs from its larger competition.

“We are locally owned and operated and that does already differentiate us from a lot of other moving companies,” he said. “We’d like to think we (also offer) a very personalized service.”

Preissner said R & R sells boxes and packing supplies – so customers are able to skip the trip to the store to pick up tape and boxes – and offers packing and unpacking services as well.

R & R Moving Company, he said, also has on-site warehousing and climate-controlled storage for people looking to relocate – “we’ll take you anywhere in the country that you need to go.”

Depending on the size and distance of the job, Preissner said the moving process can sometimes span a number of months.

“We just had a client that is moving to Tennessee and was in the process of building a home there,” he said. “He was getting ready to sell his home in Milwaukee. He hired us to move all his belongings into our warehouse and then made the move down to Tennessee temporarily into a rental home. Once his home is built, he’ll call us, and we will haul his belongings down there for him.”

Succession planning

Preissner said he felt he was paid a big complement when Schroeder approached him to lead the business into the future.

“I’ve been working here for over three and a half years now,” he said. “I think he appreciated my work, and I think he saw some potential (in me).”

Preissner said he knew Schroeder eventually wanted to retire from the company – which prompted the ask of him when he got to that point.

“We were out in the yard one day, and he asked me what I was thinking about for my future,” Preissner said. “I told him that I love the moving industry and providing these services to people, and that’s when he brought up the topic of me eventually taking over. Lo and behold, that’s what happened.”

Preissner said the ownership transition has been methodical.

“I guess the transition, in a sense of learning the ins and outs of the business, was taking place the entire time that I have been working here,” he said. “But the actual transition, that is getting down to the nitty gritty parts of the business, was fairly quick.”

Building on his established experience through his new found co-ownership of R & R Moving Company, Preissner said has been the most rewarding part of the transition.

“The best part about taking over the business has been the fact that I have been working here for so long,” he said. “I have been able to serve as an apprentice in advance of co-owning the company.”
